Major General Claude Martin was an
officer in the French, and later the British, army in India. He rose to the position of Major General
in the British East
India Company's Bengal Army. Martin
was born in Lyon, France, into a humble background, and was
a self-made man who has left a substantial lasting legacy in the form of his
writings, buildings and the educational institutions he founded posthumously. There
are seven schools named after him, two in Lucknow, two in Calcutta and three in Lyon. The
small village of Martin Purwa in India was also
named after him.
Chris Cutler is an English
percussionist, composer, lyricist and music theorist. Best known for his work
with English avant-rock group Henry Cow, Cutler was also
a member and drummer of a number of other bands,
including Art Bears, News from Babel, Pere Ubu and (briefly) Gong/Mothergong. He has collaborated
with many musicians and groups, including Fred Frith, Lindsay Cooper, Zeena Parkins, Peter Blegvad and The Residents, and has appeared
on over 100 recordings. Cutler's career spans over three decades and he still
performs actively throughout the world.
David Millar is a Scottish road racing cyclist riding
for Garmin-Sharp. He has won five
stages of the Tour de France, two of the Vuelta a España and one Stage of
the Giro d'Italia. He was the British national road champion and the national
time trial champion, both in 2007. He is the only British rider to have worn
all Tour de France jerseys and one
of five to have worn the yellow jersey. He was also the
first (of two) British riders ever to have worn the leader's jersey in all
three Grand Tours. He was banned for two years in 2004 after admitting taking
banned performance-enhancing drugs, but
four years after his return he won the silver medal at the World Time Trial
Championships. He is not related to fellow Scottish cyclist Robert Millar.
Charlotte Hudson is a British actress and television presenter who celebrates her birthday on the 4th of January. Hudson was born in Sheffield. After attending Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, she started in television co-presenting Watchdog with Anne Robinson. She presented the Sky One television series Brainiac: History Abuse, a spin-off from the award-winning Brainiac: Science Abuse, which she also co-presented. She has also appeared as an actress in various UK TV shows (see her CV at her management site). She regularly appeared as a guest on Big Brother's Little Brother and Big Brother's Big Mouth.

John McLaughlin (born 4 January 1942, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England), also known as Mahavishnu John McLaughlin, is an English guitarist, bandleader and composer. His music includes many genres of jazz, and rock, which he coupled with an interest in Indian classical music to become one of the pioneering figures in fusion.
